Master in Biosciences and Healthcare Engineering

In this Master program, the discipline “Molecular Biotechnologies and Bio engineering, Pathophysiology, Therapeutics (BMBI-PT)” includes the “RNA Enzymes Sciences” Specialization (RNAES) which consists of courses displayed in English and opened to international students.

Objectives of the program

Biosciences and Healthcare engineering are leading the current research in Biology and Medicine.

The scientific base of the M.S. BSIS follows up the strong interactions between the numerous disciplines applied to the fields of engineering and biomedical sciences: biology, biophysics, biochemistry, biomathematics, biomechanics, bioinformatics, bioimaging…, and also to those fields facing the basic research on the structure and function of macromolecules and of molecular and cellular mechanisms involving them.

The M.S. BSIS is intended for students coming from different disciplines and is supported by a team who has a large multidisciplinary training. As a privileged place for disciplinary or institutional mergers, the BSIS program is also the crucible of multidisciplinary research in biosciences, bioengineering and healthcare engineering.

Objectives of the program: to provide a coherent set of fundamental knowledge, scientific and technical, not only theoretical but also practical, and to develop methodological and organizational tools in the fields of cell and tissue bioengineering, molecular biology, biochemistry, enzymology, structural biology, biological and medical engineering of medication and then to apply them to the analysis, expertise and to the issue resolution of experiences or professional situations.

The teaching teams of different disciplines are paying attention in a particular way to the personal and professional project of each student. One of the educational objectives of the program is also to enable students to develop their capacity for autonomy, integration, organization and communication through group works and group projects.

The different disciplines of the program are completed by the knowledge and know-how skills of several external lecturers, who are professionals from public and private structures.

At the regional level (Grand East) and in the broader context of the University of the Greater Region (UGR, gathering the universities of Lorraine, Saarland, Luxembourg, Liege, Trier and Kaiserslautern), the M.S. BSIS is an original and unique offer that brings together skills and builds on the research forces in Biosciences, Bio-Engineering and Healthcare Engineering located on the sites of the faculties of Medicine, Pharmacy, Sciences and Technologies and the University Hospital of Nancy.

  • The program is supported by recognized research teams which have confirmed the participation of their teacher-researchers in the teaching program and also their interest in accepting students for the training period of the 2nd year of the M.S.
  • The M.S. BSIS relies on the participation of teacher-researchers and researchers of the main laboratories of Université de Lorraine (UL), involved in the sectors of Biological Sciences and Healthcare Engineering. In Université de Lorraine, the M.S. BSIS is a unique and unified program created with the interest of an increased coherence and visibility for the students


The program is organized on 2 years. The different disciplines of the 1st year (M1) are organized in agreement with 5 disciplines of the 2nd year (M2).

Postgraduate studies
  • For all the disciplines of M2, students have access to trainings which lead to a direct professional integration or open the possibility to continue their education on a long term. The BMBI-PT option is the backbone of the programs leading to research works
  • The educational content of the program offers a reasonable choice of combinations adjusted to the project of a direct professional integration or the choice of continuing education with a doctoral program.
  • The M.S. BSIS is connected mainly to the graduate school (ED) Biology-Health-Environment (BioSE) and partially to the ED IAEM-Lorraine (Computer, Automation, Electronics and Mathematics) with the support of the research strengths of the leading UL laboratories involved in the field of Biological Sciences and Healthcare Engineering.
  • Some foreign laboratories (Luxembourgish, Belgian, German and Austrian) are also involved in the program, especially in the international RNAES specialization of BMBI-PT. These laboratories are labelized or associated and they participate to the teaching program or in welcoming students in internships.

Associated skills and know-how

Skills or common capabilities expected at the end of the training :

  • Capacity to manage and carry out the development of a multidisciplinary project, using the required scientific, technical and technological skills
  • Capacity to synthetize a set of documents and information in order to carry out a rigorous and controlled study protocol, in a spirit of constructive criticism and on the base of regulatory and scientific requirements.
  • Capacity to master the scientific and technical technologies applied to each specialization.
  • Capacity to master verbal and written communication (appreciation, group work)
  • Solid onsite experience through internships.

Transversal skills
  • While training students in scientific, technological and fundamental or applied disciplines they have chosen for their project, the educational goal is also to help them to gradually acquire autonomy. Therefore, a significant proportion of personal work and group work is expected during the program.
  • The priority is given to the development of individual skills and attitudes in the context of a team work or in real professional situations. An internship is mandatory during S10 (for at least 24 weeks, counting for 30 ECTS).
  • Internships can be performed in France or abroad :
    • In public and private hospital sectors (CHU, hospitals, medical clinics, doctor’s offices) for the disciplines ITBM and IB,
    • In public and private laboratories for the disciplines  ITBM, BIM, BBMRC, BCP, IB, GC et BMBI-PT,
    • In companies and industrial companies (pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, food processing, medical technologies, biotechnologies etc.) for the disciplines ITBM, EPT, IB, EBMPT et GC,
    • In public and private institutions (INRS, CRAM) for the disciplines EPT and EBMPT.
  • In order to provide a specialized expertise and to complement the knowledge, many professionals are significantly involved in the teaching process. These external contributors come from public and private sectors located in Lorraine Region – France  or abroad :
    • Pharmaceutical industries (ETAP in Nancy, BASF in Nancy, Cytheris in Paris, Transgène in Strasbourg)
    • CHU of Nancy, Cancer Institute of Lorraine, CH of Sedan
    • Small, medium and large companies in the field of medical technologies (Siemens, Philips, GE, SD Medical) and biotechnologies (Cohiro)
